Fantastic tour that packed in a lot and gave a good variety of activities without feeling too manic! Highlight was the bunkhouse we stayed at located at the foot of Snowdon but otherwise in the middle of nowhere - complete with a campfire on a starry night…The tour was really thoughtfully put together and definitely got the impression that the owners are trying to do things the right way… would definitely recommend” (review by Anthony, September 2021)

+ More About Wales

Where better to experience sustainable, low-carbon trips that connect you with nature, local community and your own well-being?

The Wales Coast Path runs continuously for 870 miles (1,400km) around the coast; there over 1,200 miles (1,930km) of National Cycle Network; around 19% of Wales has official Dark Sky status, perfect for stargazing; and Wales has more than 600 castles – more by area than anywhere in the world!

The Human Development Index is a UN Development Programme measure of people's capabilities, not economic growth. The UK ranks highly at position 13 on a global scale at 0.932, yet Wales comes lower at 12/13 of its regions at 0.901 (2019).

Wales is one of the first countries in the world to have sustainability written in its government legislation. Whether it is renewable energy, zero waste strategies or the Well-being of Future Generations Act, Wales has a clear ambition to create a sustainable future with 7 clear goals, and because everything’s connected, all public bodies must work to achieve all of them:

  • A prosperous Wales.
  • A resilient Wales.
  • A more equal Wales.
  • A healthier Wales.
  • A Wales of cohesive communities.
  • A Wales of thriving culture and vibrant Welsh language.
  • A globally responsible Wales.

Wales generates twice as much electricity as it uses, exporting the surplus. It pioneered the 5p plastic bag charge to cut waste and pollution. A tree is planted in Wales & Uganda for every child born or adopted in Wales! It is also the only country in the world to have legislated to protect the interests of future generations, and have appointed somebody independent to oversee that.

“We hope that what Wales is doing today the world will do tomorrow.” – United Nations.

(review by Karen, September 2021)

+ Weather

Wales has a temperate climate with 4 seasons.

The best times to visit is during the summer months: May, June, July and August are generally the sunniest and driest months, usually partly cloudy, but it never really gets very hot, and rarely above 80°C.

Winters are mostly cloudy, cold, windy and likely wet, though rarely drops below freezing 0°C.

West of Wales is the Atlantic Ocean, responsible for a lot of the weather received, for which Wales usually bears the brunt, lying right under the jet stream where the hot and cold air collide.

Always be prepared for precipitation, especially in mountainous areas!

The People

  • Small groups: max enjoyment, less community pressures

  • Local suppliers mean local stewardship

  • Tours support local rural employment

  • Benefit from local guides’ local knowledge

  • Gain insight into farming culture

Local guides educate about the local area and share local knowledge so you’ll become more immersed in the local way of living, and help preserve local customs for future generations. Local guides’ knowledge means the landscape comes alive with historical significance.

+ The Suppliers

Every UK adventure holiday supports local, independent businesses what make the world an interesting place, for

  • a more authentic experience,
  • home-grown active interest in protecting their personal environment only local adventurers can bring.
  • character, charm, creativity and passion -
  • bringing a destination to life
  • helping you to experience a true sense of place.
  • critically, providing employment in rural areas to local communities.

+ The Suppliers

Small groups: Max 16 guests per trip; well-within recommended guiding ratios for safety and enjoyment, but also avoids large groups descending on small rural communities, putting local infrastructure under unnecessary pressure, for a more enjoyable experience for all.

+ Culture & Behaviour

Learn the language! Keeping the Welsh language alive is sacred here, so you’re encouraged to learn simple words and phrases during your time. Even pronouncing place names can be a challenge, but a fun way to get to grips with the local culture!

Learn about the locality The trips may be outdoors adventure, but local guides will highlight architectural and environmental landmarks too - history is everywhere but if you don’t know what to look for, it can be hard to find in lumps, bumps and tumbledown ruins: Iron age hill forts lie scattered across the hillsides, traces of the slate mining industry once dominated the North. Learning about the history and culture of a region brings life and soul to a place.

Farming culture More than 80% of Wales’ land area is dedicated to farming, so respecting the countryside code, understanding farming practices and recognising its importance to local economy, culture and wildlife conservation is important for anyone visiting. This includes adhering to recognised walking trails and bridleways, closing gates, taking litter home and leaving wild plants and animals in their rightful place.

Diolch! (Welsh for thank you!)

“Tim is clearly very passionate and knowledgable about Wales and punctuated the activities with a mix of history and information to add to the enjoyment.” (review by Mark, September 2021)

The Purpose

Mission:

  • to always do right by you,

  • by our communities

  • and by the world we live in.

  • Every adventure features a carbon label.

Whilst the UK is a relatively wealthy country, there are still many areas where communities need support.

Businesses can catalyse change faster than any government – and tourism, reaching into many communities as it does, is well-placed to take up the mantle.

+ Society

  • Support Local: Tours frequent only independently-owned local businesses. Local accommodations and catering is also discerned for commitment to local produce, meaning less miles & impact.
  • Unique: Visit and enjoy or gift products like craft breweries, small batch gin distilleries and handcrafted arts.
  • All Abilities

+ Economy

  • Great value, for guests & hosts: Partners are paid fairly for high standards, and thrive – enabling further rare rural job creation.
  • Invest: Your money goes straight into the communities that you visit, making a difference to the people you meet.

+ Environment

  • Carbon labels: every small group adventure has a carbon label to share the total carbon footprint per customer: aiming for zero carbon. Current adventures average just 15kg CO2e per person per day vs average UK person per day: 22-28kg CO2e; driving 20 miles in the car 5.6kg CO2e; or a typical Dubai hotel room for 1 night: 99kg CO2e.

  • Carbon Mitigation: committed to plant one tree for every traveller, which more than compensates unavoidable emissions. This is more than an offset but a local biodiversity project in itself, working with the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley AONB in North East Wales planting new, biodiverse woodland areas of native Birch, Oak, Rowan, Holly, Hazel, Hawthorn, Cherry and Elder trees helping to increase the available natural habitat for the UK’s native wildlife including insects, moths, bats and birds such as Tree Pipits and woodpeckers.

  • Low carbon: Glasgow Declaration partner and Tourism Declares Climate Emergency; signatory & plan to measure and further reduce carbon emissions per trip guest more

  • Use public & group transport to keep individual passenger footprints to a minimum.

  • Low impact: Sustainable supply chains: promoted by working closely with partners or further adoption of alternatives to reduce carbon, plastic, and support locally sourced products.
  • Local produce: preferably organic, meaning as kind to the environment as delicious.
  • Against plastic: you will be provided with an aluminium bottle on arrival to refill this each day at your accommodation. Packed lunches use paper bags or wax paper wrap. Accommodations are encouraged to use refills of locally hand-made organic soaps.
  • Blue Flag: Sustainable Boat Tour Operator partner.
  • Small groups: Max 16 guests per trip, or up to 10 on guided walking and 6 guests on mountain bike trips; well-within recommended guiding ratios for safety and enjoyment, avoiding large groups’ pressure on small rural communities’ infrastructure.
  • Sustainable working: the company operate remote working, avoiding daily commuting emissions, utilising technology to facilitate meetings whenever possible to reduce the need for physical travel.

“We really are trying to do the things the best way we can; for our guests, our communities and our planet. It means the world to us that you feel that through your experience.”

Not only did I feel like I got the local experience of Wales, but Claire’s expertise and drive to see Wales made me appreciate my trip more.
